What is a food handler card?
A food handler card (also called a food handler certificate or food handler permit) is a credential that proves you have completed approved food safety training. It demonstrates your knowledge of safe food handling practices, personal hygiene, temperature control, and contamination prevention.
Who needs a food handler certificate?
Six states — California, Texas, Illinois, Arizona, West Virginia, and New Mexico — legally require all food handlers to hold an ANAB-accredited food handler certificate. Many other states and local jurisdictions also require or strongly recommend food handler training within 30 days of employment. Even where not mandatory, most employers prefer certified food handlers.
How long does the course take?
The course takes approximately 2 hours to complete. It is entirely self-paced, so you can start, stop, and resume at any time. You can take the 40-question final exam as soon as you finish all 9 chapters.
What score do I need to pass the exam?
You need a score of 75% or higher (30 out of 40 correct answers) to pass the final exam. You are permitted 2 attempts at no additional cost. If you do not pass after both attempts, you will need to review the course material before trying again.
How long is the certificate valid?
The food handler certificate is valid for 3 years from the date of issue. Some states, counties, or cities may require renewal more frequently (annually in some areas), so check your local requirements. The certificate is personal and transfers with you if you change employers.
Will my food handler card work in other states?
Yes. Because our course is ANAB-accredited and compliant with ASTM E2659, it is recognized by state and local health officials nationwide. ANAB accreditation is the gold standard for food handler training programs, giving health inspectors confidence in your credentials regardless of location.
